The Sacrament of Holy Baptism

In the Episcopal Church, Holy Baptism, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, is performed on infants and children as well as adults. We understand baptism as full initiation, by water and the Holy Spirit, into Christ's body, the Church, and not a rite of passage related to our physical birth.    Baptised persons become full members of the Church and and even the youngest may participate in holy communion. However, since infants and young children are not capable of making their own commitment in faith,  parents and godparents will make the baptismal vows on behalf of the child.  Their obligation is to nurture the child up in a Christian home and community, so that  the child grows into their Christian identity and becomes ready to make a mature choice for God at confirmation.   For these reasons,  a preparation class for the parents, and, if possibly the godparents, of infant or child baptismal candidates is required before the baptism  and additional preparation is required for adult candidates.

Because of the serious nature of the commitment and the fact that Christian life is intended to be lived out with others, we strongly encourage parents  to commit to participation at All Saints or another church.  This participation will support  the parents in their own  Christian faith and parenting and will afford their child an opportunity for  Christian education and friendship with other Christian children.

Weddings at All Saints Church

Our Church is available by special arrangement for weddings of both members and non-members of the Episcopal Church by our priest (if available and desired) or by another Episcopal or other Christian clergy person arranged by you directly.

If you wish to be married in the Episcopal Church by an Episcopal clergy person, the marriage must comply with the requirements of Canon Law, including the following important requirements of under Episcopal Church Canons I.18 and I.19:

  • at least one of the parties must have received Holy Baptism
  • both parties must have been instructed as to the nature, meaning and purpose of HolyMatrimony by the officiating member of the Clergy or by someone acceptable to that Clergy person
  • at least 30 days prior notice of the intention to be married must be given to the Clergy member except under weighty circumstances where one of the parties being married is a member of the congregation
  • if either party has been married previously and the prior husband or wife is still living, special requirements apply, including obtaining the consent of the diocesan Bishop.

Our understanding of Holy Matrimony within the Episcopal Church is that it is a physical and spiritual union of a man and a woman, entered into within the community of faith, by mutual consent of heart, mind, and will, and with intent that it be lifelong.
